Wilderness Festival 2011: Antony & The Johnson

Antony & The Johnsons at Wilderness Festival 2011

Wildnerness Festival finally announces the first acts for its first year. Held over the weekend of August 12-14 at Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, Wilderness proclaims itself a family-friendly festival. A special Family Ticket, allowing entry for 2 Adults + 2 Young Persons is also available for a combined price of only £250 plus booking fees. Curated jointly by the organisers of Meltdown, The Secret Garden Party and the MAMA group, Wilderness seems closely modelled on Festival Nation's more established Latitude Festival. First acts announced are headliners Gogol Bordello, Toots & The Maytals, Laura Marling, Antony and The Johnsons (playing with an orchestra), Hayseed Dixie and The Guillemots. Its organisers describe Wilderness Festival as "A place of Freedom, Inspiration And Rejuvenation. It is a festival of pioneering performances, Fireside Banquets And Theatrical Spectaculars!" Aside from the music, "communal feasts" are planned for 800 festival guests prepared by Skye Gyngell and Moro from Exmouth Market in London, Theatre from the Old Vic Tunnels and Factory and more to be announced.

A new music festival, Wilderness Festival, will take place at Oxfordshire's Cornbury Park in August  2011. Cornbury has been putting on shows for a century and was the home of the recently departed Cornbury Festival, which now takes place at nearby Great Tew Estate. Cornbury Estate takes in 1,700 acres of ancient British woodland  and is one of the last few privately-owned forests in southern England. The 10,000 capacity Wilderness Festival will aim to work closely with the local community to raise funds for Cornbury's pre-and primary schools. Wilderness Festival will be organised by the MAMA Group. CEO Dean James declared: "If there was a premier league of British festival sites, Cornbury would sit right at the top. It's an 500 acre deer park, surrounded by a crescent of six inter-linked lakes with a stunning forest beyond. We're delighted to be working with Lord and Lady Rotherwick on the festival and we hope to deliver a great show that develops for many years to come." Wilderness Festival co-organiser Tim Harvey added: "The Cornbury site is a mind boggling prospect for any event organiser - the hard bit is knowing where to start! We're hoping to the festival will become a real hub for Oxford's creative community and a genuine platform for all types of artisans and community arts organisations."

Announcements of who is playing at Wilderness Festival 2011 are expected shortly.

Please note, this is not the official Wilderness Festival website, nor is it masquerading as that. This is a dedicated fan site that aims to provide all the information about the best new festivals in the UK plus (and this is the best bit) I want to hear your comments. The problem with all those official festival websites is that anything negative in a comment gets edited out. We don’t do that here. Please bookmark this site and return regularly.
